TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely accepted English language proficiency exams in the world, especially for academic admission in universities across the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and other English-speaking countries. It is developed and managed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), a globally respected organization known for creating reliable and standardized English language assessments.

Types of TOEFL Tests

While TOEFL has evolved over time, the most commonly used format today is:

TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test)

This is the main version accepted by universities and institutions worldwide. It assesses English proficiency in an academic context and is delivered online at authorized test centers or in a home edition format under secure conditions.

Other older formats like TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT) are less commonly used today but may still be offered in areas with limited internet access.

TOEFL Modules

TOEFL iBT evaluates four core language skills:

  1. Reading – Understand and analyze academic texts
  2. Listening – Comprehend spoken English in lectures and discussions
  3. Speaking – Express thoughts clearly and coherently
  4. Writing – Write well-structured essays on academic topics

Each section is designed to reflect real-world academic tasks that a student might encounter at university.

Test Format

The TOEFL iBT is typically taken in one continuous session lasting around 3 to 4 hours:

  • Reading: 3–4 passages, 30–40 questions
  • Listening: 4–6 lectures/conversations, 28–42 questions
  • Speaking: 4 tasks involving responses to prompts
  • Writing: 2 tasks including an essay and integrated writing task

The test is conducted online, and the content adapts in difficulty based on your responses in some sections.

Scoring System

TOEFL iBT uses a score range from 0 to 120:

  • Reading: 0–30
  • Listening: 0–30
  • Speaking: 0–30
  • Writing: 0–30

Universities set their own score requirements, but many competitive programs require scores between 80 and 100+. ETS provides score reports to institutions directly or through your ETS account.
